Hampshire distances
|
To help work out the scale of old maps of a county it is useful
to have, ready to hand, some known distances. These figures
were quickly calculated for Hampshire, it would be easy to do
the same for any county. Remember that these are crow flight
distances, not road distances. The first groups of figures are
for a few easily found places spread over the county.

A more comprehensive group of towns is those chosen for the
Old Hampshire Mapped project (HANTSMAP). The location of the
town is the location of its church. This is pretty uncertain
in some instances, eg Eastleigh, and Aldershot.

The overall size of a county map is quickly measured and provides
a rapid guide to the scale. These figures are for Hampshire, the
county boundary is that of the 1986 revision of the
Administrative Areas Diagram. The overall size is of the
county, not the sheet of paper the map is printed on.
