These notes are made from a copy of Thomas Kitchin's map of Hampshire published in The London Magazine, or Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer, 1651. It was part of a series published 1747-60. The item used is in the Map Collection of Hampshire CC Museums Service item HMCMS:FA1988.5.

This study concentrates upon what can be seen from the map; studies of the background of county mapping in England, and map makers have been published elsewhere.


Thomas Kitchin
Thomas Kitchin was an engraver and publisher working at The Star, opposite Ely Gate, Holborn, London, about 1738-76. He mostly produced maps and charts and was appointed Hydrographer to the King, George III, but also published book plates, portaits, etc. Kitchin had been an apprentice of Emanuel Bowen 1732-39 and later married his master's daughter, Sarah. Thomas Kitchin worked with Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Jefferys.
