Allington Bridge
Allcannings, Wiltshire KAC48.73

KandAC mile 48
Dusty chalky track, on a dry day, over the hump.
Allington Bridge is an accommodation bridge, 48 miles 73 chains from Reading, carrying a farm track from Allington over the canal to nowhere very much.
headroom 10ft8ins
depth of water 6ft1ins
Allington Bridge from the westward side. These bridges are all the same; all individual.
Brickwork in Allington Bridge; courses of english bond, and some english cross bond though that may be by chance, and skewed brickwork to throw stress into the batter of the arch. I don't quite understand why this is done on some not other bridges; this bridge is hardly oblique to the canal.
While building the canal, John Rennie, the engineer, was experimenting with ways to build a bridge at an angle yet keeping the sides of the arch parallel to the canal. This and other skew bridges show some of his tentative designs.
Brick arch, batter, shadow, footings, etc
There is a stop groove, a slot into which stop planks to dam the canal with a stank can be fitted, in the bridge.
The stop groove on the opposite side; well maintained with an iron lining.
