Alton Barnes Airfield was used by the central Flying School from the
mid 1930s. All it had was a grass airstrip and a windsock; it was
rated as a Relief Landing Ground. Difficult to spot from the air it
lies between the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Pewsey Devizes road,
the nearby white horse was a useful mark. It was later used as an
Elementary Flying Training School airstrip and collected a number of
buildings and gun placements. It was de-requisitioned in 1947; all
that is left is the building for the Link trainer, and a few concrete
foundations.
