Biss Aqueduct
Holt, Wiltshire KAC63.56

KandAC mile 63
South face of the Biss Aqueduct.
Biss aqueduct carries the canal over the River Biss flowing from Trowbridge to the south, towards the River Avon to the north.
The aqueduct is built of Bath stone, ashlar stonework. The arch has large stone voussoirs and is outlined by a moulded string course. The aqueduct is repaired in yellow brick. It is 63 miles 56 chains from Reading.
The aqueduct was first built, 1798, using poor stone which had got in a bad state by 1803 - before the canal was completed. It was rebuilt with better stone from a Bathampton quarry.

From the canal you hardly realise that there is an aqueduct; that's why you see boaters reading canal maps, it's not that there are many turnings to get you lost, without the map you don't see what you are seeing.
The River Biss flowing northwards to join the River Avon; from the towpath above the aqueduct.
Biss Aqueduct, south face.
The aqueduct from the fields to the south.
The canal here is on a 30ft high embankment.
Quarter of a mile south is Ladydown Mill, on the Biss.
