Coates Bridge
Roundway, Wiltshire KAC52.60

KandAC mile 52
The new Coate Bridge.
Coates Bridge carries the small road leading to Coate, Etchilhampton etc. It serves an area of modern estate housing.
About half a mile from the canal is a clay farm for getting canal puddle. This clay hole supplied the clay on which the canal relied for waterproofing its bed. The canal bed lining was a mixture of clay and gravel worked together to make a sealant; the canal sides were usually pure puddled clay. Do not use a punt pole on a canal, you might go right through the bed and start a leak.
The bridge was rebuilt 1990 to serve the increased traffic to housing developments this side of Devizes. It is a concrete construction with pretend facings to look like a modern brick arch; 52 miles 60 chains from Reading.
