Devizes White Horse; brand new for 2000.

To the north of the canal you can glimpse a white horse, one of the
chalk hill figures for which Wiltshire is famous. Although many of the
white horses are of the 18th century, this one is brand new, finished
in time for the Millennium. It was done by a local man who had always
wanted to cut one since he was a schoolboy.

Devizes had an earlier white horse on a different part of the down.
The only trace is said to be different colouring of the grass on
Roundway Hill just below Oliver's Camp (SU0064 area). This horse was
cut at Whitsuntide 1845 by the shoemakers of Devizes, and was called
The Snobs' Horse.
