Fifteen Mile Pound, sometimes called the Long Pound, takes the Kennet
and Avon Canal from the top lock, lock 50, at Devizes to lock 51 at
Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire, from where the canal rises a few more steps
to its summit.
The canal follows the contour, roughly the bottom of the chalk and the
greensand strata, on the north side of Pewsey Vale. The Marlborough
Downs lie to the north and Salisbury Plain to the south. Some savings
in distance are made by cuttings and embankments.
The pound is 125m, 410ft, above sea level.
Most of the pound is puddled 2ft thick.
