Kennet and Avon Canal
MILE 64 Holt and Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire : KAC64.00=KAC65.00

KandAC mile 64
KandAC mile 64 - OS 1inch map, early 19th century.
... some bits of canal are quieter than others; but listen for trains ...
The Kennet and Avon Canal from mile 64 to mile 65 runs peacefully along the valley of the River Avon; the first part is along the side of the valley, a steep embankment to the north, the second part is embanked both sides. The towpath is on the north side.
Woody nightshade, Solanum dulcamara, in the hedge by the towpath.
KandAC culvert 64.09
Where gaps in the bushes allow, the view to the north has the River Avon meandering in its valley, and the Westbury - Bath railway line taking a smoother curve. The large wood to the north is Great Bradford Wood.
Scarlet pimpernel, Anagallis arvensis, on the towpath.
Tall trees shadow the towpath for a long way along this stretch of the canal.
This looks like a winding point, but the canal maps say it just where a small stream enters the canal; the towpath glares in the sun.
There is a plug in the canal bed at about 64 miles 47 chains; and an overflow at about 48 chains.
KandAC culvert 64.52
Parish boundary Holt - Bradford-on-Avon: ST83975952
Work boat moored on the offside.
Water figwort, Scrophularia auriculata (impossible to photograph without extension tubes!)
The new private planting directly north and below the canal is Widbrook Wood, there is permission to walk there.
The area on the south is Widbrook; this includes Widbrook House, Widbrook Arabian Stud. The road from Trowbridge to Bradford-on-Avon comes down Widbrook Hill before crossing the canal a little further on.
Work boat, dum barge with a patina of fine rust.
Roses and diamonds on a canal boat door.
Working boat Mercury moored outside Bradford-on-Avon Marina.
