Potter's Lock.
Bottom gates, a fine garden of weeds, and a fine gap worn between the gates.
I've never been quite clear how this sort of sluice gear works, it looks hydraulic, well, that's apt.
Hydraulic? sluice gear on a bottom gate; there is an indicator disc on the rod pulling up the paddle.
Boat Joshua entering Potter's Lock.
Boats locking up.
When the lock was full the water, upper pound depth, was above the top of the bottom gates. Not a good thing, but quite entertaining.
Boats leaving Potter's Lock.
Boats leaving Potter's Lock.
And the next boat waiting to lock up.
The lock is named after the mayor of Great Bedwyn at the time the canal was built. A letter of the time expressed the thought that:-
Potter will be in his glory ...
