Wilcot Wide Water from Lady's Bridge, ie from the westward.
Part of the price of Lady Sussanah Wroughton, 1793, for having a canal
cut through her land was the landscaping of an area of the canal into
an ornamental lake.
It's suggested that rennie, the canal engineer, might have been happy
to comply with this demand as it saved embankment work where the canal
passed through a boggy area. The water is overgrown; a wildlife
preserve noisy with coots, moorhens, etc. The fish here are said to be
the largest on the canal.
