Woodway Bridge
Allcannings, Wiltshire KAC47.76

KandAC mile 47
Woodway Bridge, bridge 128; the arch looks like an asymmetric three centre arch, pleasing brickwork.
Woodway Bridge is an accommodation bridge carrying a farm track from All Cannings over the canal to nowhere very much. But, you can follow a footpath to the top of Tan Hill, a mile and a half north, the highest point of Wiltshire, 964ft. Some say they have seen a horse drawn funeral cortege with a crowned coffin up there ... which vanished.
The bridge is brick built; 47 miles 76 chains from Reading.
headroom 11ft2ins
depth of water 6ft3ins
There is a stop groove in the bridge footings, a slot into which stop planks can be fitted to make a stank to dam the canal.
Woodway Bridge from the westward.
This, and some other bridges, have a metal plate under the arch - I have no idea what for. The brickwork is english bond.
