John Rennie's bridge design is standardised but altered to suit the location. At the tail of a lock,as here, the arch is flatter and the lock chamber walls are extended to become the base of the arch.
The canal's Act has a clause requiring them to build two 'carriage bridges' at Wootton Rivers at designated points, to suit the landowners, St John's College, Cambridge. The bridges have gentle slopes; not the more common hump back of canal bridges.
