Kennet and Avon Canal
LOCATIONS
KandAC POSITIONS |
The position of sites along the Kennet and Avon Canal is given in a
variety of ways:-
KAC miles.chains - the distance along the canal measured from its
start from the River Thames, Reading, Berkshire. The distances used
are based on those given by Hammond in his maps of the canal,
interpolating as well as may be for sites that he does not position.
These distances run east to west.
Remember:-
22 yards = 1 chain
80 chains = 1 mile
and:-
1 yard = 0.9144 metres
1 chain = 20.12 metres
1 mile = 1.609 kilometres

NGR CO-ORDINATES |
Coordinates using the national grid - wherever possible a position for
a site or feature is given an 8 figure ngr, locating the feature to 10
metres. Sorted numerically these coordinates run west to east.
PARISH |
Parishes - the civil parish for each site is given. The parishes are
read off the OS Admin Areas Diagram for Wiltshire.
KandAC NUMBERS |
Bridge numbers - bridge numbers on the Kennet and Avon Canal are
counted from Reading, as the official distances are, east to west.
There are numbers which no longer have bridges, and bridges without
numbers.
Lock numbers - lock numbers on the canal are counted from Hanham, west
to east.
Culvert numbers - culverts now appear to have numbers, from 1999-2000?
on the pattern C[no]; little attempt has been made to use these.
DIRECTION |
Directions - in the text descriptions the canal is treated as a line
from east to west. The phrases westward and eastward mean those
'logical' directions along the canal, away from or towards Reading. As
the canal wiggles about the countryside the actual direction of travel
might not be respectively West or East! North and south are used with
similar disregard for truth when referring to the side of the canal.
