Toy egg, varnished fruitwood egg decorated with an oval transfer print of the Bridge of Dochart, Killin, the egg opens up to reveal a colour printed wooden globe which balances inside the top so that it can revolve, 1870-1890s.
The wooden ball is covered with a map of the globe printed in 12 gores; the map shows the continents each in a different colour with whatever country names can be fitted in, and is marked with the North and South Poles, Equator, Arctic and Antarctic Circles, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Ecliptic; the main oceans are labelled; the spelling of Cape Colonie, and Tubet with a u-umlaut suggest a german maker, though the target market is english.
Telegraph cables are drawn on the globe, labelled 'Cable'; UK, across the Atlantic, to New York; San Francisco across the Pacific to Tokyo? Japan, then to Canton, China and across the China Sea and Java Sea to the north coast of Australia, then across land to Sydney; Sydney across the Indian Ocean to Cape Town, Cape Colony, then via the Atlantic to UK; note that this round the world line is not the all red line completed in 1902.
Some railways are shown, including the line across the United States from New York to San Francisco, completed 1869.
