The index pointer uses a polar coordinate system; there is a scale pivoted half way up the left side of the map; it can be lined up on a radial scale 0..150 printed on the other 3 edges of the map (covering nearly 180 degrees); the scale is marked A..Z, each segment divided 1..6; in the street index there are entries like 'Goat Lane 74 P3' the street is found by lining up the scale on 74 on the edge and looking along it to P3.
