Goos 1665
Chart, Canaal tusschen Engeland en Vrancriick, the Channel between England and France, scale about 17.5 miles to 1 inch, by Pieter Goos, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1665.

The chart studied was on display at the Institute of Maritime and Heritage Studies, Portsmouth.
The map size is: wxh, sheet = 67x45.5cm, wxh, map = 548x432mm
These notes are strongly biased towards a Hampshire interest.

decorated with cherubs and sheep, a cow, two young men - one holding a 'stick with a thing on the end' that I've seen before in engravings of this period, like a protogolfclub. Further to the left is a surveyor in working clothes, a surveyor's chain hanging from his waist, holding a cross staff, and dividers.

There are two coats of arms on the map; for France and for England. France has three fleur de lys, a crown above; England has three lions of England, a crown, and a dragon and a lion supporters.

There is a compass rose; N marked by a fleur de lys, East by a circle with 3 circles. The chart is printed with North at the top of the sheet.
Rhumb lines are drawn from the compass rose and another 16 centres.

There is a scale of latitude in the side border; chequered in 2 minute intervals, labelled in 10 minute intervals. The chart includes from 48d 0m to 52d 20m N. The coast of Bretaigne, Normandie, Caux, France; the coast of southern England and Wales from Cardigan to Orford Ness; the Scilly Isles; and a tiny corner of Ireland.
