Carte de la Manche, Chart of the English Channel, scale about 12 nautical miles to 1 inch, by Nicholas Sanson, published by Alexis Hubert Jaillot, Paris, France, 1692 in 'Atlas Nouveau' 1692, drawing together charts drawn 1636-53.
 
  
These notes are taken from Sanson's Chart, 1692 on display at the Institute of Maritime and Heritage Studies, Portsmouth.
The chart size is: wxh, sheet = 91.5x63.5cm; wxh, map = 808x583mm. These notes are strongly biased towards a Hampshire interest.

The map has several compass roses; North marked by a fleur de lys, East by a circle and 3 circles. These and various other centres are used for rhumb lines.

Printed in the borders are scales of latitude and longitude for a rectangular projection; chequered at 5 minute intervals, labelled at 10 minute intervals. The map includes from 11d 55m to 21d 05m E, from 47d 50m to 52d 10m N. The prime meridian is somewhere in the Atlantic, about 18d 50m W of Greenwich.
The chart shows the coasts of Bretagne, Normandie, Picardie, France; the coast of southern England and Wales from Pembrokeshire to Suffolk; the Scilly Isles; and a tiny bit of Ireland.

chequered in minutes, labelled 5, 10, 5 , 10, etc. The scale line is fitted to the latitude scale alongside. 60 leagues = 3 degrees = 385.0 mm gives a scale 1 to 866424, assuming a league of 3 nautical miles of 6080 feet. The chart scale is about:-
