These notes are taken from the New Map of Great Britain by Herman Moll, London, 1717. The map studied is in the Map Room, British Library, call number BL:Maps 177.d.1.

The map is in two sheets, sizes: wxh, sheet = 62.5x52cm, 62.5x51cm; wxh, map = 618x1024mm. NB remember that these notes are strongly biased towards a Hampshire interest.

Printed in a picture frame cartouche upper centre of the North sheet is:-

Printed upper right on the South sheet:-
Sold by Herman Moll against Devereux Court between Temple Bar and St. Clements Church in the Strand. 1717.
The map includes England and Wales, Scotland with part of Orkney, and part of Ireland, and a corner of France; an inset map shows the rest of Orkney, and Shetland.

The map has a scale of:-
Miles of Great Britain 60 in One degree
chequered in 1 mile intervals to 5 then in 5 mile intervals, labelled in 5s to 30 then in 15s. The 60 miles = 99.8 mm giving a scale 1 to 967541 assuming a statute mile. The map scale is about:-

The map has scales of latitude and longitude, and a graticule of a conical projection. The bottom scale is labelled:-
West from London / East from London. The prime meridian goes through London, at about London Bridge. The:-

The shape of Hampshire can be judged from the graticule.
at 51d N 1d longitude = 62.0 mm
at 52d N 1d longitude = 60.7 mm
1d latitude = 100.9 mm
thus:-
ratio longitudes at 51d and 52d = 1.02
ratio latitude/longitude = 1.64
The figures which make Hampshire 'square' are 1.02 and 1.58.

Most of the main river systems of Hampshire are shown, by wiggly lines, except the Enborne.

There are a few scattered hillocks suggesting relief. They are more decorative than informative.

Settlements are positioned by a circle, differentiated by style of lettering. In Hampshire:-

This Map contains all the Market Towns in South Britain, and such Places in North Britain as are equivalent to them, every County in England is represented by two Members, and the Welch Counties by one apiece: All the Burroughs or Towns in Great Britain that have a Right to choose Members of Parliament are mark'd with one star or two, according to the number of Members elected by them: and whereas by the Union Act in 1707 divers alterations have been made in respect to the Representation of the Shires and Royal Burghs of North Britain, which cannot be well distinguished in the Map, the words of the Act itself here follow: ... ...

Having done a Map of South Britain with Ogilsby's [sic] Roads and others, and all the Post Towns as they now stand, Communicated to me by the Postmaster General; and likewise another of North Britain, with many Remarks relating to the Fishery, Woods, &c. I have now, to Comply with my Friends Importunities, Composed one intire Map of Great Britain, wherein, besides other useful Improvements, you have the Royall Borroughs of North Britain particularly distinguish'd, which were never done before, and some of them are not to be found in any Map. also the New Forts Viz. Bernera, Kilwhnimen, Ruthvan of Badenoch, and Innersnail.
