Research Notes

Map Group PETRI 1588

Petri 1588
These notes are taken from a poor reproduction of the map of Great Britain, copying that of Sebastian Munster, 1540, by Sebastian Petri, Basle, 1588. The reproduction is published in:-
Shirley, Rodney W: 1991 (revised edn): Early Printed Maps of the British Isles 1477-1650: Antique Atlas Publications:: ISBN 0 9514914 2 3

Detail notes are unduly biased towards Hampshire.
The map is printed from a woodcut in the copper plate manner and copies the map published in 'Geographia' by Sebastian Munster in 1540. It owes its drawing to Ortelius, Mercator and the Gough map.

MAP FEATURES
title
Printed across the top is:-
Engellandt mit dem anstossenden Reich Schottlandt so vor zeiten Albion und Britannia haben geheissen.
The map includes England and Wales, most of Scotland without the Orkneys or Shetland, and a good part of Ireland.

orientation
labelled borders
up is W

The map borders are labelled:-
OCCIDENS
SEPTEN.
ORIENS
MERIDIES
It is printed with West at the top of the page. Its forerunner, Munster 1540, had East at the top.

scale line
Printed lower centre is a scale line of:-
Miliara Anglica
The 100 miles are chequered in 5 mile intervals, labelled at 10 mile intervals.

descriptive text
There is a plain cartouche with descriptive text printed lower right (but illegible in the reproduction):-
Diese landschafften [ ] Ptolemeus die Britannischen Insulen ...

sea area
sea moire effect

The sea is engraved with a moire effect.

coast line
coast shaded

The coast line is shaded for emphasis. It is possible to recognise:-
Christchurch Harbour [large]
Solent, The
Southampton Water [over large]
Portsmouth Harbour [perhaps small]
relevant to Hampshire

rivers
Rivers are drawn with a double wiggly line tapering to a single line inland. A number of them end in a lake, a stylistic feature reminiscent of the Gough map.
Rivers relevant to Hampshire are:-
Stour
Avon [running inland to 'Sarisbere']
Test [through 'Ransy' ending in a non-existent lake]
Itchen
Hamble ?
Meon
Wallington
Enbourne
Loddon ?
These are not at all definite identifications!

relief
hillocks

Some relief is shown by large hillock symbols. Scotland and Ireland have ranges of mountains. Wales has some but not where you'd expect. And there are odd hills here and there. A large hillock north of Salisbury is probably:-
Salisbury Plain

county
Some counties are labelled, eg:-
VILSHIRE
but there are no boundaries, and many unlabelled.

settlements
Settlements are positioned by a circle, and most have a tower around the circle. London has more buildings. All place name labels seem to be in italic lowercase text.

Hampshire Places

The places relevant to Hampshire are:-
Linutgor [Lymington]
Calsot [Calshot Castle]
Ransy [Romsey]
Hampton [Southampton]
Walram [Bishops Waltham]
Porchmat [Portsmouth]
Allon [Alton]
Hanant [Havant]
and there may be others which I am not recognising. This is more places than are included on the forerunner map, Munster 1540.
