ABBOTSTONE, Domesday Book manor and shrunken village in Itchen Stoke
Old English 'abbot's farm'. Itchen Stoke was held by Romsey Abbey, though by Domesday Book this manor was held by Hugh de Port, not the Abbey. The medieval spellings show the replacement of the Old English 'abbod' by the borrowing from French 'abbat' (1203) 'Abboteston'. Predictable later developments include 1579 'Aberston' and the transmutation of the last syllable into 'stone'.
