ALDERSHOT
Old English 'alder corner'. The infant river Blackwater forms the county
boundary with Surrey here, and describes a broad arc leaving part of Hampshire
projecting a little between Weybourne and Ash in Surrey. This is probably the
'sceat'='corner' in question (cf GRAYSHOTT). Alders beside the stream are
probable enough. There was another 'alder shot' in Droxford recorded in
826.
In view of the later military associations of Aldershot, it is interesting to
note that alder charcoal was preferred for the making of gunpowder (Rackham
1980: 306).
