ALICE HOLT
Old English/Middle English 'managed woodland of AElfsige'. Gelling (1984:
196) suggests that a typical 'holt' was a wood of a single species, and it may
be that the central settlement name of 'Bucks Horn Oak' is indicative. But the
modern forest is quite large and there is room for more than one 'holt.'
