ALICE HOLT
Old English/Middle English 'managed woodland of AElfsige'. Gelling (1984: 196) suggests that a typical 'holt' was a wood of a single species, and it may be that the central settlement name of 'Bucks Horn Oak' is indicative. But the modern forest is quite large and there is room for more than one 'holt.'
