ALLUM GREEN in Brockenhurst
The modern name preserves, rather than continues, the Domesday Book name, which was either Old English 'AElfwynn's farm' or 'AEthelwynn's farm', in either case the owner being a woman; or the second element of the personal name might have been the male '-wine' in which case the formation without '-s' is unusual in this region (but cf AWBRIDGE, WOLVERTON). The modern identification with Allum Green rules out Gover's suggestion that 'Allum' represents a British river name of a familiar type, as in 'Aln' (Northumberland). Cf 'Alum Chine' in Bournemouth (1759 'Allam Chine') which may be appropriately compared with 'Alum Bay' (Isle of Wight). Cornelius de Vos had been extracting alum in the Isle of Wight under monopoly licence in the mid 16th century. James Blount, sixth Baron Mountjoy took over de Vos' patent in 1567 to exploit the deposits of shale and iron pyrites under Bourne Heath to produce alum and copperas. The attempt ruined him (Young 1957: 15-16).
