Alre

ALRE, river
A back formation from ALRESFORD, first recorded in 1724, but known earlier as 'Alresford river'. The Old English charter boundaries make it clear that this river was considered to be the headwater of the Itchen, whilst what is now known as the upper reaches of the Itchen was called 'Ticceburna'
(see TICHBORNE).
