commentary: The dam was built by Bishop Godgrey de Luce, 1200. It imppounde water of the River Alre to make a 200 acre fish pond, Alresford Pond. The top of the dam was used as a causeway for the London to Southampton road, unti a new turnpike road took the traffic, in 1753.
The dam is a chalk fill mass dam; 2000yds long, 20ft high, 30ft wide at the top. Water level was controlled by sluices, The Shettles, at the south end, outflow passing through a masonry lined channel under the stone arch road bridge. There are now weirs to control outflow.
