ALVERSTOKE
The place was originally just 'Stoc'='dependent farm, place'. Tradition relates that a Saxon lady called 'Alwara' (ie: 'AElfwaru' or 'AEthelwaru)' bestowed the manor on St Swithin's, Winchester (cf VCH III: 203). The forms cited do not contradict this. (She may also be commemorated in 1279 'Aylwarstrete' the north part of what is now 'Jewry Street' Winchester. If this is the same person, then she was 'AEthelwaru' not 'AElfwaru'.) Some forms of the 13th century and later show that the first element was taken to be the common man's name 'AEthelweard.'
