ANSTEY, manor in Alton
Following Gelling (1984: 63-4), this is Old English 'anstiga,
anstig'='amalgamation of two (or more) rising paths in a col', though Gelling
admits it is difficult to justify in this particular case. It depends how one
views the medieval importance of the roads that fan out from Alton and from
Cuckoo's Corner, east of Anstey. The older view was that the element meant
'single file path'.
