Hypothetical Old English 'Brihtmannestun'='Brihtmann's farm', though the name has undergone all manner of irregular developments including the stopping of [x] to [k] and the completely unaccountable modern transformation. The form of 1681 is out of line and seems to depend on the earlier tradition.
