Coates 1989 BARTON-ON-SEA, seaside resort in Milton Probably hypothetical Old English 'Beormantun'='Beorma's farm'. 'Beorma' would be a regular short form for a name like 'Beornmund'. The forms quoted refer to the ancient manor; the modern resort has grown as a natural eastward extension of the Bournemouth conurbation convenient for the New Forest. 'Barton' is Old English 'beretun' literally 'barley farm'; later 'grange farm'. The word 'barton' is recorded as a Hampshire dialect word by Cope (1883: 5). |
