BASHLEY
Old English 'wood/clearing of Baegloc'. (The first '-s-' in the Domesday Book form is a mistake.) This uncommon name was borne by an 8th century abbot. The transformation to 'Bashley' can be understood by looking at the intermediate form 1606 'Balloxley'; it is a euphemism, and in 1664 we find, among others, the present spelling.
