BASING PARK in Froxfield
Virgat' terr' vocat' Basynge in decenn' de Langenhurst ie: 'a yardland called Basynge in Langhurst tithing'. The last word in this expression is the original name for the place, Old English 'langen hyrste'='long wooded hill (oblique case form)'. It takes its later name from the family 'de Basyng' who held it in the 14th century.
'Basynge' in 1453 'Basinges' in 1647; took its name from the family of William 'de Basyng' whose family hailed from BASING. The older place name was 'Langhurst' (1307 'Langehurst')='long wood or wooded hill'.
