BAUGHURST
Ekwall and Gover translate 'Beagga's wood', claiming 'Beagga' to be a short form of a man's name like 'Beagmund, -noth'. This is possible. But the Old English form may be in error. All the medieval development is compatible with an Old English hypothetical name 'Bagganhyrst'='badger wooded hill'. Hypothetical 'Bagga' is not recorded, but place name scholars have long accepted its existence (Smith, English Place Name Elements I: 17-18). The name would be parallel to the numerous 'Bagleys' and 'Bagshaws'. (Note that there is a 'Brock's Green' (probably 1245 'Brochurst') about 4 miles away in Ecchinswell.) Moreover 'hyrst' rarely appears with a personal name as first element. Unusually, therefore, I prefer to take an attested Old English form as misleading. (The document (in B.L. Add. 15350) is spurious, in fact.)
The modern (irregular) pronunciation is first shown by 1558 'Bogorste' 1741 'Baugust'. The parish name has also influenced the name 'Haughurst' which was 1256 'Hauekehurst'='hawk wooded hill'.
