BEAULIEU, river
The river takes its name from the village. But it was known about as '(aque que vocat') Otere' 1236 'Otere' perhaps hypothetical 'Otorea'='otter stream', cf 'Otterwood' the Domesday Book manor of 'Otreorde' (1236 'Oterwud'')='otter wood'. Three streams descend from the vicinity of the hamlet to the river.

After a very pleasant ride, on land without a stone in it, we came down to the Beaulieu river, the highest branch of which rises at the foot of the hill, about a mile and a half to the north-east of Lyndhurst. For a great part of the way down to Beaulieu it is a very insignificant stream. At last, however, augmented by springs from the different sand-hills, it becomes a little river, and has, on the sides of it, lands which were, formerly, very beautiful meadows. What its Condition is - Is a River of somewhat less Consideration in Degree than Bussleton, But of large indraught, good Tydes, and fair Depths at low Water; 'tis about 4 Miles from the Mouth of it to the Town of that name, Tis also convenient for Building small Schipps One of the 4th: Rate hath been built about a Mile below it, at a place Comodious and Safe.
