BEENHAM, manor in Kingsclere
The present name is the manorial specifier (from the family de Bynam (ie: Beenham (Berkshire), about 7 miles away) who held the manor in 1327) of the earlier village name 'Edmondsthorpe' (1167 'AEdmundestorp' 1236 'Eadmundestrop')='secondary settlement (Old English 'throp, thorp') of Eadmund'. Now mapped as 'Cheam School'; the prep school was moved here in 1935 (Gover).
