BEVOIS MOUNT, TOWN, VALLEY in Southampton
In the 1720's the Earl of Peterborough developed for himself a mansion called 'Bevis Mount' commemorating the medieval legendary hero Sir Bevis (Anglo Norman 'handsome face') of Hampton. The lower part of the estate towards the river Itchen came to be called 'Bevis Valley' (sometimes with the eccentric spelling 'Bevois' which has now prevailed). This area was developed for housing in 1852-67 when the former Peterborough estate was broken up; it is now called 'Bevois Town' and contains the commemorative 'Peterborough Road'.
