The earliest spelling (from a MS. judged authentic by the best authorities) suggests an '-ingtun' derivative of the man's name 'Bica'; thus 'Bica's farm'. The medieval spellings indicate the possible coexistence of synonymous names descending from 'Bicingtun' and 'Bicantun'. The first clear indication of the change from [k] to [x] (spelt gh) comes in the 16th century.
