BINSTEAD
Old English 'place where beans grew'. In the 14th century its manors had the feudal names 'Bynstedepopham, Bynstedekyng'; the Pophams were from POPHAM, and there was royal interest in this estate before the time of Domesday Book. In 1375 the other manor was adjudged to have reverted to the King by the death of John de Bensted senior and his son's minority (VCH II: 483). Hypothetical 'Beanstede' was also the older name of 'ST. CLAIRS' in Corhampton and of 'Binstead' (Wt).
