WALTHAM (BISHOP'S), parish and chase
Old English 'wealdham'='woodland estate', in a technical sense (cf Huggins
1975). Places bearing this name appear to be establishments operative very early
in Anglo Saxon times, and were royal woodland domains. This place is
occasionally 'Suthwaltham' in the Middle Ages (contrast (NORTH) WALTHAM) and
variously also 'Waltham Episcopi' or 'Bisshoppeswaltham' and the like. The
document of 904 records the grant of the estate by king Eadweard ('the Elder')
to the see of Winchester. The form of 909 means 'to the boundary of the
inhabitants of Waltham'. The earlier name for the chase was 1301 'Hordareswode'
1307 'Hordereswode' which looks suspiciously as though it contains Old English
'hordere'='treasurer' (ie: of the bishopric?). The term 'chase' was originally
applied to non-royal hunting grounds.
