BISHOPSTOKE
Old English 'stoc'='grange farm'. Despite appearances the Old English forms belong here and not to Itchen Stoke. Their import is obscure, but they may contain a reference, of very great antiquity, to Jutes (West Saxon/Old English 'Yte' cf Ekwall 1953: 132); however the form 'Yting' appears to be a singular '-ing' name here. Bede (HE I, xv) refers to the Jutes of Hampshire. ('Iutarum natio') 'Ytene' persisted as a name for the NEW FOREST (qv), according to the post-Conquest chronicler Florence of Worcester. The estate is associated by name with the bishops of Winchester from the 13th century, though it is held by the see as early as Domesday Book.
