BISTERNE, manor in Ringwood
Spellings in '-t-' are more frequent than '-d-'. 'Bytti's (haw)thorn'. The man's name is related to a form 'Buttinga graf' found in a boundary clause of Worcestershire (see Ekwall under 'Butley'). Ekwall suggests hypothetical 'Biedenes-' for the Hampshire place name, but that is based on a single untypical form (1190 'Bedenestorn').
