BLACKWATER, river and hamlet of Yateley
Self explanatory. Gover attributes such names to the appearance of the river
bed in sandstone areas. The river was originally called 1272 'aqua de Swalewe';
the name duplicates that of the 'Swale' in Yorkshire, North Riding. Ekwall says
that the river name is related to that of the bird, citing 'move, plash' as the
rather weak link connecting the meanings, but giving interesting continental
cognates like Middle High German 'swalm'='whirlpool' (better perhaps
'swall'='surge (of dammed water)'). The old river name survives in
'Swallowfield' (Berkshire), through which the Blackwater flows.

Defoe 1724
... from whence [Chertsey] crossing the Black Desert, as I call'd it, of
Bagshot-Heath, I directed my course for Hampshire, or Hantshire, and
particularly for Basingstoke; that is to say, that a little before I pass'd into
the great western road upon the heath, somewhat west of Bagshot, at a village
call'd Blackwater, and enter'd Hampshire, near Hartleroe.
