Old English/Middle English 'mouth of the stream', formerly a locality in Holdenhurst parish. The first record commemorates the stranding of a whale. 'Bourne', ie: the name of the stream which enters the sea near the pier, is all that appears on some maps in this area as late as 1817. Some of the oldest plans of the area, and some early references by inhabitants, also show just 'Bourne' as the name of the place.
