Coates 1989 BRAISHFIELD, hamlet in Michelmersh, later parish Possibly Old English 'undergrowth covered open (relatively treeless) land'. The first element is probably the ancestor of the dialect word 'brash' and may be found in 'Bracebridge' (L). The reference may be to woodland regenerating on open land, suitable for coppicing for small poles, etc. But Cope (1883: 11) gives as a Hampshire dialect word 'brashy'='full of small stones', which may suggest a more likely origin. |
