refce: Lewis, J T: 1828: Plan shewing the New Road from Winchester to Petersfield: Wheelers Hampshire Magazine (Winchester, Hampshire
'A considerable benefit would accrue to the public at large were a Turnpike Road carried through the valley of Bramdean from Winchester to Petersfield. The inconvenience the country generally labours under, particularly at the times of Weyhill, Magdalen Hill, & Winchester Fairs, is such as to demand geat attention.' Vancouver's Hants Survey. Page 503.
This Road, which is shorter by nine miles than any other, completes the Line from Bath, Cheltenham, and Gloucester, to Chichester, Arundel, Brighton, and all the Eastern parts of the Kingdom, a fine level Road having been also lately made from Petersfield to Midhurst. The posting distance from Winchester to Petersfield is reduced to two easy stages of nine miles each, and every interruption by long and tedious hills is avoided.
