Coates 1989 BRAMSHAW, formerly partly in Wiltshire Hypothetical Old English 'Bremelsceaga'='bramble bush wood' or 'bramble strip of wood'; the occasional forms in 'u/o' seem to have been influenced by the word 'brom'='broom'. Note 'Bramble Hill Walk' (cf 1595 'Brambelhill') in this parish. 'Sceaga' usually denotes a small wood, copse or woodland strip. |
