BREAMORE, liberty
Hypothetical Old English 'Brommor'='broom( covered) marsh'. The village is
beside the Avon and surrounded by ponds. Forms representing the modern
pronunciation, whose origin has not been accounted for, are seen from 1245
'Bremmora' 1544 'Bremmer'. There may have been a Middle English adjective
hypothetical 'bremen'='broom grown' whose form could have influenced the place
name. The element 'brom' shows an oddly frequent, and early, tendency to unround
the vowel to 'a' when shortened (cf BRAMLEY and ctrst. TOTTON).
Every parish in Hampshire whose name includes 'brom' or a relative has
unenclosed common surviving today (Tavener 1957). This is testimony to the
durability of soil conditions. Common is in general rather rare in Hampshire
away from the SW and extreme NE of the county. The survival of a pocket of it in
BRAMDEAN, a chalkland parish in the centre of the county is striking.
