BROUGHTON
On balance, this seems to be hypothetical Old English 'Beorg(a)tun'='hill, barrow farm'. There are at least 5 barrows on the crest of Broughton Down and Broughton Hill overlooking the village in the valley of the Wallop Brook. The persistent 'u' spellings, which are also implicated in the modern name, must be put down either to dialect phonology or to confusion with the common name type 'Burton' < "burhtun". discounting the 1086 form "breston" forms with "br-" are first found from 1485. The modern spelling may also have been influenced by the adjacent HOUGHTON.
