CANDOVER, three parishes
The parishes take their name from the stream whose name (following Ekwall) may have been from hypothetical British 'Caniodubri'='beautiful waters'.
The three specifiers come into use for the separate parishes/manors in the 13th century. The family 'Brune' held land in BROWN CANDOVER. in the 15th or 16th century, but it is not known what, if any connection they had with the place before that. In the 13th or 14th century the place was alternatively 'Abbot's Candover' (1279 'Candever Abbatis') from being held by Hyde Abbey since 901.
