BROWNWICH, manor in Hook with Warsash
Old English 'brown specialized farm', probably a dairy farm. The sense of the
compound is unclear. 'Brown' is not very common in place names, and I know of no
other case of its occurrence with a habitative term. The reference of 962 is to
an associated 'weir' (fishtrap).
